ATAC in the Far East

Creation date: 16 April 2009

Rome transport authority ATAC, together with other Italian technological partners and with the financial support of the Italian Ministry for the Environment is involved in projects to transfer the experience of Rome in the integrated use of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) to China and India.

Beijing: ITS – TAP and IBOCS Intelligent Bus Operation and Control System Projects

ATAC is currently involved in the IBOCS project, Intelligent Bus Operation and Control System, financed by the Italian Minister of Environment, created as an extension of the project ITS-TAP, already successfully carried out in Beijing.

The main goal of IBOCS is to offer the Chinese partnership of BPT (Beijing Public Transport) the support needed for a better management of the public transport fleet for the Olympics Games which took place last August.
IBOCS program aims at reducing air pollution from vehicles, through the optimization of the management of bus services. ATAC further offered training to Chinese operators in Beijing and Rome.

Shanghai: Initiatives with the city
The positive experience with the city of Beijing has aroused the interest of other Chinese cities, which are all experiencing growing problems linked to transport congestion and pollution.

The city of Shanghai is interested in a project regarding the management and control of the public transport fleet via satellite systems, similar to those already used for ITS-TAP, in view of the Universal Expo in 2010. A partnership with ATAC and other Italian partners has been already agreed for this matter.

New Delhi: “Comprehensive Mobility Planning and Management using ITS in Delhi”
ATAC is cooperating in India since 2005, when it signed a MoU with AITS, India ITS Association. Atac then hosted a delegation of the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India.

ATAC and the Italian Institute of Atmospheric Pollution – CNR, along with other technological Italian partners and with the financial support of the Italian Ministry of Environment, is designing a comprehensive mobility planning and management system using ITS in Delhi

Besides, ATAC will be involved in the STADIUM project, which will focus on:

• the identification, design and implementation of demonstrators in selected sites, where India is in ATAC competences and where large events are planned within the timeframe of the project. These demonstrators will concentrate on specific applications, involving the innovative use of advanced technologies and solutions that are expected to contribute to increasing the level of performance of transport services in all or most of the targeted performance dimensions

• the design, production and testing of an integrated handbook to support all players involved in the organisation and implementation of transport services for large events.
