State traffic body denies road death statistics are a ‘sham’

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) yesterday rejected claims that government road death statistics were a “sham”, after allegations that the figures did not add up. The RTMC, a Department of Transport agency responsible for road traffic management across SA, said there were 1333 fatalities in December 2008, compared with 1050 deaths in December last year, indicating that the road death figures for December fell 21% last year.

Motorists leaving Cape Town’s city centre on Friday afternoon faced massive delays on all routes out of the city, after a truck carrying heavy bales of grain overturned on the N1. The outgoing lane of the major highway towards Paarl was closed while emergency teams attended to the accident. The accident happened at about 10:30 on Friday morning, when two trucks collided and overturned on the N1 outgoing just after Koeberg Interchange, at a new deviation in the road. Ministers, high level government officials and road safety activists from across Africa have pledged support for a UN Decade of Action for Road Safety on their continent and around the world. The pan-African conference met in Dar es Salaam Tanzania, on 8 July 2009, to review the growing epidemic of road injury on the continent and to pledge support for a push to secure the proposal for a UN Decade of Action for Road Safety . The Make Roads Safe Africa conference was organised by the Make Roads Safe campaign, the World Bank Global Road Safety Facility, the AA of Tanzania and the UN Economic Commission for Africa. National Department of Transport Press release: All motorists are warned to exercise caution on the roads in order to reduce the number of accidents on South Africa's road over the Easter period. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) supports the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) which together with National Vehicle Testing Association (NVTA) are currently running a road safety campaign from 1 to 9 April 2009. The campaign is called Free Easter Vehicle Safety Check. It is aimed at examining as many vehicles as possible with regard to the condition and effectiveness of safety critical items, such as brakes, tyres, steering, suspension and lighting. It is encouraged that all motorists should do a pre-trip inspection before their departure so they can avoid unnecessary delays and accidents on the road.

The Brazilian government, via the National Department of Traffic (DENATRAN), has declared that, for Brazil’s National System of Automatic Identification of Vehicles (SINIAV), each state will chose whether the electronic tags to be implemented on vehicles will be battery operated or not. The battery powered tags enable greater exchange of information between vehicles and the antennas and is similar to what is already being used for some toll collection systems.
