Brazil makes tracking systems in new cars mandatory

According to Resolution No 245 passed on 27 July 2007, all new vehicles leaving the factory, produced in Brazil or imported, starting 24 months from the date of publication of the resolution may only be sold if they are equipped with an anti-theft device.

According to the Directive No 47 of 20 August 2007, the anti-theft equipment must perform the functions of immobilisation, calculation and storage of geographic positioning, based on accurate information received from a satellite constellation.  It should also have an integrated communication module that allows the anti-theft equipment to send information to a monitoring services center and to receive commands from it, when the tracking system is actuated.

The anti-theft device and tracking system must be officially homologated in advance by ANATEL, the body responsible for the regulation of the data transmission spectrum, and by DENATRAN.

The owner of the vehicle will decide with respect to enabling the equipment through the tracking and location services providers.
