ITS

Accident Prevention Program, organization and road traffic control, had notoriety in Brazil in the mid 1970s when specialists, technicians and authorities of the mobility sector recognized the necessity of a better road traffic management.

Several efforts helped to merge the statistical data that came around the actions and technology development of process and products.

The opportunity to implement concepts and systems of (ITS) in highways and road complex with toll had a big impact in Brazil since 1993, when the Brazilian government started the Highway Concession Program. Since then around 10, 000 km of roads have been administrated by private companies together with the State, with the objective to improve the infrastructure and the systems implementation of (ITS) in order to maximize the efficiency of traffic operations and restructure transport and logistic by adopting Information Technologies.

Nowadays, the utilization scale of (ITS) on board in Brazil is low although already incorporated technologies such as GPS and the Internet directed, mainly to the carriage and public road transportation.

For urban transport, some Brazilian cities such as São Paulo, have generated investments around US$ 70 millions adopting systems of traffic management and electronic fiscalization with the objective of traffic control and traffic accident reduction.

With a road fleet about 40 million vehicles in a highway network around 300.00 Km the applicated index of (ITS) should reach acceptable levels up to 2010 according to strategic planning defined in the “White Book” (2002) edited by the Ministry of Technology and Science, Brazil.
