China and Europe discussed potential cooperation of ITS technologies

Creation date: 28 October 2009

China is the fastest developing country in the world. The fast development, however, causes serious problems on road transport such as congestions, high rate of road accidents, and pollution. Experiences from European countries and many European technologies can help China to tackle these problems. To strengthen cooperation between EU and China in road transport, an EU-China Workshop was held on 26 October 2009 in Beijing. The workshop was co-organised by ERTICO, coordinator of the SIMBA II project, and China National Intelligent Transport Systems Centre of Engineering and Technology (ITSC), a partner of SIMBA II who is responsible for coordinating SIMBA II activities in China.

The workshop gathered key stakeholders in the field of Intelligent Transport Systems and Services from China and Europe with the aim to discuss needs for cooperation between China and EU in research and development of ITS technologies and services. Such cooperation is expected to support China in its efforts to increase road safety and transport network management as well as improve levels of transport-related pollution.

The workshop was moderated by Dr. Yanying Li, ERTICO - ITS China. Dr. Bin Li from ITSC and Dr Yinli Chen from Tongji University gave presentations to summarise outcomes of local expert meetings organised by the SIMBA II consortium. ERTICO partners, such as AVL List, PTV, Satellic, participated the workshop. Road safety, pollution, electrification of vehicle, ITS service provision and sustainable transport planning were identified as main areas where cooperation between EU and China can play an important role. Participants of the workshop had active and fruitful discussions up on these topics. Outcomes from the discussion will be used to form R&D agenda for the European Commission.

Workshop presentations are now available here.
