Quantity of highway and road network structure By the end of 2005, there were 1.9 million kilometres of national highways in China - 59,900 kilometres more than the end of 2004 and 2.5 million kilometres more than at the end of the 9th Five-Year Plan.
Technical grade level and road surface level of highway in China By the end of 2005, there were 1.6 million kilometres total miles of national graded highway, 82.5% of the total miles of the national highway. The number increased by about 1.4% compared to the end of 2004 and 4.2% more than the end of the 9th Five-Year Plan. Graded 2 and above roads equal 325,800 kilometres, 16.9% of the national highway total. This number increased by about 0.9% compared to the end of 2004 and 3.8% compared to the end of the 9th Five-Year Plan.
The total amount of highways with pavement and simple pavement were 994,600 km - 51.5% of all highways – an increase of 3.6% from the end of 2004.
Expressway construction in China During the 10th Five-Year Plan, 24,700 km of expressway were completed – which is 1.5 times more than expressways constructed in the 7th, 8th, and 9th Five-Year Plans. By the end of 2005, there were 19 provinces with more than 1,000 kilometres expressway in China.
Construction of rural and township roads By the end of 2005, there were 1.5 million kilometres of rural and township roads. The density of national highway is 20.1 kilometres per 100 square kilometres. Presently in China, 99.81% of all towns and 94.3% of all villages are linked to highways, however there are still 75 towns and 38,426 villages without connections to highways.
Construction of bridges and tunnels By the end of 2005, there were 336,600 bridges spanning a total of 14.7 million metres, and 2,889 highway tunnels totalling 1.5 million metres.
