India to mandate RFID tags on cars

Creation date: 28 September 2007

The Times of India has reported that the ministry of heavy industries is considering a proposal to make it mandatory for cars manufactured in India to have RFID-enabled tags fitted. It will be the responsibility of car manufacturers to ensure that all new cars have these radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags.

In addition to their use in tolling and congestion charging, the tags would help in traffic management, as well as enforcement since traffic violations by motorists could be tracked and identified.
