Over 100,000 die in Indian road accidents in a year Creation date: 07 December 2007 India has the world’s highest number of road accident deaths, and it is steadily climbing every year.
Further the minister said, as per preliminary data, covering the majority of states and union territories, “the number of deaths due to road accident is estimated at more than a lakh (1,01,439) during the year 2006 as compared to the figure of 94,968 deaths for the year 2005.”
Early this week, the secretary of the department of road transport and highways Brahm Dutt had said the figures were “highest in the world.” India has overtaken China in recent years, as the latter has been steadily bringing down road deaths.
The minister told the House that the “safety of road users is primarily the responsibility of the concerned State Government.” However, his department “has taken several steps to improve road safety for the road users.”
A few months ago, in its most comprehensive statement on road safety, Vatican too had expressed its deepest concerns about such incidents. It also issued a detailed advisory for road users.
Among the steps that Indian government has initiated is incorporation of road safety as an integral part of road design at the planning stage for National Highways/Expressways. Various steps to enhance road safety such as road furniture, road markings/road signs, introduction of Highway Traffic Management System using Intelligent Transport System, enhancement of discipline among contractors during construction, and road safety audit on selected stretches.
The government is also carrying out publicity campaign on road safety awareness through audio-visual-print media.
