Russian motor vehicle market is considered to be the faster growing and the most interesting market in the world. It is predicted to be the largest in Europe by 2010. Moreover, Russia’s construction industry will reach a value of 1.7trn RUB (US$62.63bn) by 2012, making up nearly 3% of GDP. In April 2007, Sochi won the bidding for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Construction on the Olympics infrastructure, which is include stadiums and ski runs, is underway, as well as infrastructure projects to ensure that the regions utilities and transport network is ready in time for the Olympic visitors in 2014. These facts mean that Russia face problems of growth in transport demand, road safety, congestion and pollution.
In general, transport congestion is a huge problem for the major cities of Russia, such as Moscow, the largest megapolis in the country. Traffic flow on the main roads has reached 90% of capacity during peak hours. The Russian highway system includes a total 948 000km of roads including 416 000km that serve specific industries are not maintained be government. Besides it, only 336 000km of all roads are paved.
Russian Government has elaborated transport strategy of the country for the period 2010 – 2015. The priority of the strategy are increasing of the road safety, developing transport infrastructure, including the construction of new roads, an integrated public transport system, reduce polluting emissions and greenhouses gases.
With a view to advance project SIMBA II in Russia, Associations GLONASS/GNSS – Forum and “Professional Association in vehicle risk prevention” had concluded agreement for the cooperation in the field of constructing Intelligent Transport Systems and Services.
