Easter road safety plan Creation date: 30 April 2009
This is according to the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Bheki Cele, who was speaking on Tuesday at the launch of the Easter Road Safety campaign in Mtunzini, on the North Coast.
Cele said patrols would be conducted in the province during Easter, focusing on pedestrian safety, drunk driving, public transport, reckless overtaking and vehicles without number plates.
He also launched the Automotive Number Plate Recognition - an advanced technology that can read number plates of vehicles, stationary or moving, and instantly tell police about any unroadworthy and unlicensed vehicles. Cele said the country cannot afford to continue to lose more than 40 lives and experience 140 serious injuries every day. Not only is the pain and suffering immeasurable for victims and their families, but the cost to the Treasury and the economy is about R56-billion per annum, he said. Cele thanked enforcement officers, emergency services and health personnel who work tirelessly during holidays to keep people safe.
