No decreases in road accidents, says MVA
Creation date: 25 February 2009
The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund said this week that it failed to achieve its target of a 30% decrease in road fatalities during the 2008 festive season. “When we were planning the road safety programme, we thought a 30% decrease in road fatalities was reachable. But the Gobabis accident that wiped out a family increased the percentage of fatalities,” CEO Jerry Muadinohamba said this week during an MVA feedback session on the just ended festival season.
He said it was necessary for all stakeholders in road safety to increase their coordination efforts. “For the next six months to a year, we can learn to better co-ordinate and share resources,” he added. Deputy Minister of Works and Transport Paul Smit said the country needed to unite in its road safety efforts and bring them under one branch. “We are busy drafting a proposal to Cabinet that will unite the whole road safety management in the country,” he said. “Road safety should be a daily event.”
