SIMBA II - Transforming road transport through worldwide cooperation

Road transport is at the heart of every nation’s economic and social well-being. Road accidents, congestion, lack of infrastructure and poor urban and interurban planning have a tremendous negative impact on the life of citizens.

The statistics say it all:

  • There are 45,000 deaths and over 1.3 million people injured in the EU every year.
  • 316 million labour hours are lost annually in São Paulo due to congestion.
  • Traffic flow on main roads in major Chinese cities has reached 90% of capacity during peak hours.
  • 4 million people are seriously injured in road accidents every year in India.
  • Each year there are approximately 498,000 traffic accidents, 46,500 people seriously injured and 13,000 traffic fatalities in South Africa.

The SIMBA II initiative, which brings together the EU and the nations of Brazil, China, India, South Africa and Russia, will consolidate an international cooperation network that aims to increase road safety, mobility and transport efficiency.
